Gymnasts beam up for meets
Women set for No. 2 Utah

Collegian Sports Writer

Tracy Kerner, last week's Eastern College Athletic Conference Division I Women's Gymnast of the Week, will try to continue her winning ways tomorrow.

The senior Lady Lion tri-captain and the No. 10 Lady Lions (8-1) will engage in war against No. 2 Utah (8-0) at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow in Rec Hall. The Lady Lions, coming off an impressive first-place finish in the Cat Classic last weekend, have Utah Coach Greg Marsden a bit skeptical about a win for his squad.

"(Penn State) sounds like a very good team," Marsden said. "Especially at home."

Kerner's contributions so far this season have helped her team succeed. Against Ohio State on Jan. 28, she placed first on the uneven bars (9.85), balance beam (9.825) and floor exercise (9.875). At the Cat Classic, Kerner was equally impressive, placing first on the beam (9.875) and floor (9.65).

Even though the Utes have been plagued with injuries and have competed in three meets in the last eight days, they have managed to perform well.

In Utah's eight wins, it has defeated five top-25 teams including No. 1 Georgia, No. 12 Washington, No. 13 Brigham Young, No. 15 Southern Utah and No. 20 Arizona State.

But Marsden is not focused on a victory against Penn State. He has other things on his mind.

"We're less concerned about winning or losing," he said. "We just want to be consistent and stay healthy."

Marsden said he believes his top all-arounder, senior Suzanne Metz, will be consistent in her routines to help lead Utah to a victory.

Lady Lion Coach Steve Shephard recognizes Utah's talent but has remained confident.

"They're awesome." Shephard said. "But they're beatable."

Shephard added if the Ute's leave any doors open, the Lady Lions will walk right in. He expects a competitive matchup that either team can win -- but he knows the Utes will not come unprepared.

"They are going to be ready," Shephard said. "They always are."
