Soccer disservice
The Daily Collegian, like many other members of the American media, has once again done a great disservice to the sport of soccer. Your decision to print the article concerning Manchester United's forward Eric Cantona's attack on a fan during the match against Crystal Palace is a perfect example. Once again you and your fellow media members have lifted your ongoing blackout on the sport only to report on an incident with no real relation to the game itself. If you are going to report on the sport, then report on all aspects of the sport (or at least on some aspects related to the actual game). With the amount of coverage in the American media, most people probably don't know who Cantona is and they probably have never even heard of his team, so why waste the space in your paper? Why not use this space for match reports, league tables, analysis, or even just reports of major happenings in the sport. If you are not going to report on the rest of the sport then don't report on the occasional bad incident that occurs either. The decision to print this article is as ridiculous as deciding that the only NBA story printed this season be about Scottie Pippen's chair-throwing incident. This too is a rare incident that occurs from time to time, yet you chose to print other things about this and other sports. From the reports given in the American media, one would think that soccer is when rowdy hooligans get together to fight with players and trample each other to death. If you are going to report on soccer at all, give it the same respect that you give other sports and report on matters related to the game itself.
