Rape responsibility

I am writing to commend The Daily Collegian on its Jan. 26, 1995 editorial opinion concerning rape prevention. Many of us too commonly make the mistake of perceiving Happy Valley as a safe utopia due to State College's rural town atmosphere. True, State College does not present the same amount of danger for Penn State as large cities do, such as Philadelphia does for Temple University. Yet we cannot ignore the population impact the University presents and our own individual responsbility. This means that each one of us, as students, faculty, staff and community members, need to take our own initiative towards protecting the safety of ourselves and our community. The Undergraduate Student Government has been and will continue to work with both the University and the State College Borough to improve the quality of our safety, through such means as education, increased emergency phones and lighting, greater promotion of existing services, distribution of campus and town night maps, and sponsorship of the Weekend Loop. We do need to hold the University and borough accountable for addressing safety concerns and providing for our security. Yet the true test of these initiatives lies with our responsible use of them. Take the Weekend Loop home, use the emergency phone, walk on the lit paths and use the escort service; these resources are here for a purpose. Crimes occur all over the world; Happy Valley is no different. Penn State is only as safe as you let it be.
