The women's indoor track team made a strong showing at the Syracuse Invitational on Saturday. Many Lady Lions placed in the top three in most of the events, which were contested for individual placements.
"We had a really good meet," Coach Teri Jordan said. "This was a good tune-up for the Michigan quad meet next weekend."
There were two first-place finishers for the Lady Lions. Erin St. John took the 3,000 meters with a time of 9-minutes 46.21 seconds.
"I ran a decent race and I was happy with my performance," St. John said.
Tracy Pombo won the 800-meter dash with a time of 2:20.02.
"I wasn't happy with my time because last week I ran a 2:18, but I was happy with my win because it was my first in college," Pombo said.
In the 400 meters, Adrienne McCrey was third with a time of 58.51. Monique Gillman was second in the long jump with a leap of 17-11. Holly Jones placed third in the high jump with a distance of 5-8. Also, in the shot put, Kim Hicks finished fourth with a distance of 46.6. Kris Kelly ran a personal best in the 3,000 meters (9:56.21), finishing third.
"We were very happy about the lifetime and season-best times," Jordan said.
In the mile, Penn State had two finishers in the top three -- Sue Huelster took second place (5:07.06) and Tresa Hohnka finished third (5:07.65).
"I wasn't too pleased but I think I did all right," Huelster said."I'll just have to work to get my time down."
The Lady Lions were very strong in the 4x400 and 4x800 relays. The 4x800 team placed second (9:41.08), while the 4x400 team placed third (3:55.22).
Because of the weekend snowstorm that hit the Northeast, traveling was tricky from State College to Syracuse.
"We were happy that we got back safely," Jordan said.
