Gymwomen perform well to take Cat Classic

A fight took place in Missouri on Friday and Saturday nights, just like Missouri Women's Gymnastics Coach Charles Jacobson predicted -- a cat fight.

When it was over, the No. 10 Lady Lion gymnastics team had scratched and clawed its way to victory in the 15th annual Cat Classic.

Penn State placed first with a final score of 191.275. Coming in second was No. 7 Arizona (191.125), ahead of Missouri (189.8), No. 14 Kentucky (189.425), Auburn (188.2) and Pittsburgh (180.625).

Lady Lion senior tri-captain Tracy Kerner was, once again, ferocious in the victory. She performed well on the floor exercise (9.65) and balance beam (9.875), but struggled on the uneven bars (9.05).

Junior Bridget Foley and freshman Joanna Knox also roared for the Lady Lions.

Foley came up big on the bars (9.675), beam (9.8) and floor (9.65).

For the third time this year, Knox competed as an all-arounder. She scored well on the floor (9.55) and on vault (9.75), but was weaker on the uneven bars (9.375) and balance beam (9.2).

Saturday night events included the individual competitions. Senior tri-captain Karen Cimochowski placed second in the vault (9.85) and freshman Christi Hutch placed 10th (9.525).

In the individual beam event, Kerner placed first (9.75), senior tri-captain Kerry Slattery finished third (9.635) and Foley placed ninth (9.225).

The Lady Lions had two top-10 finishers on the floor -- Kerner (9.65) placed sixth (9.65) and Foley placed 10th (9.575). Foley was the only Lady Lion to place on bars, finishing fourth (9.675).
