Suspect charged in stabbing death

Collegian Staff Writer

A State College murder suspect was charged with first- and third-degree murder during a preliminary hearing Friday.

Carrico stood before District Justice Robert Shoff at 1 p.m. Friday for his preliminary hearing stemming from the Jan. 8 stabbing death of 22-year-old Theodore Enos of State College, Centre County District Attorney Ray Gricar said.

In addition to the murder charges, Carrico will also face charges of aggravated assault, reckless endangerment and simple assault. Those charges stem from an alleged scuffle that ensued when Jeff McDowell, 19, of State College attempted to restrain Carrico after Carrico allegedly stabbed Enos, Gricar said.

Carrico allegedly stabbed Enos with a hunting knife at a rooming house at 228 S. Atherton St. in a room full of witnesses, police said.

Carrico is currently being held in Centre County Jail in lieu of $1 million bail, Gricar said.

While no definite trial date has been set, Carrico was ordered to stand trial, Gricar said. The trial will probably occur "in the summer or the spring," he added.

Gricar said he would not speculate on the motive behind the murder beyond the evidence that was brought forward in court.

After the incident, Carrico fled State College with Kathryn Prisk, 17, and headed west, the State College Police Department said. Carrico was captured in Burlington, Colo. on Jan. 10 by the Burlington County Police Department and the Kit Carson County Sheriff's Department after a multimedia manhunt, State College police said.

Carrico was returned to State College Jan. 28 and was arraigned before District Justice Daniel Hoffman on murder charges.

Prisk returned to State College on Jan. 10, the same day she and Carrico were captured, police said. No charges have been filed against her at this time.
