Letter to the Editor
Back in the ring
Who says cartoons can not be effective? The "Voices Rematch" cartoon in the Jan. 31, 1995 issue of The Daily Collegian on the opinions page got through to someone, namely me. Big deal, right? Wrong. I am writing to repsond to the challenge and make one of my own. The condition of The Lionhearted had been sketchy at best since the last issue exited circulation some time ago. Unfortunately, this was due to poor decision making, lack of interest, lack of time, and the acquisition of a bad reputation. So, The Lionhearted seemed to disappear. Now, in cooperation with Mr. Ben Novak, I am undertaking the responsibility of both resurrecting the paper and changing its image completely. Gone will be the conservative rhetoric and tabloid-like quality. What will appear will be another source of campus news, campus opinions, town events, and sports coverage that fails to make other publications. It will still remain an opportunity for students from all majors to gain experience in a desired field or just serve as an outlet for their opinions (similar to the Collegian). Students on campus have only one source of campus information to turn to on a daily basis. Due to this fact, coverage of events which might be of interest to a sizable group of people gets lost in the shuffle. This must change. At a university of this size, ignorance of what takes place around us is unacceptable. This University is to you what you make of it. With more access to more information, one can broaden their horizons, get involved, and maybe leave something that can be passed on to future generations of Nittany Lions. I am in no way insulting the quality of the Collegian or Voices. What I am doing is letting everyone know that the opponent did not lack the courage to show up to the fight. Instead I am saying the new competitor is in training for a new sport. Gone will be the liberal vs. conservative mentality. In its place will be news. But this training cannot take place overnight. This semester will be that training period. During this time the financial situation will be worked out, the opinion of what students want to read and know about will be discovered, and the ground work will be laid in preparation to begin printing again Fall Semester, 1995. The Lionhearted is still here. And I intend to make sure that it will remain here for a long time. Once the training is complete and the image is changed from that of a street punk to one of a prize contender can we step into the ring and see what we are all made of. Until then, I suggest we prepare for the future and I'll see you in the fall!
