The Lady Lion gymnasts don't plan to perform any floor exercises to the theme of The Nutcracker. But they do expect the Buckeyes to be an easy nut to crack.
No. 11 Penn State (2-1, 1-0 Big Ten) will take on Ohio State (3-2, 1-0) at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow night in Columbus, Ohio in a conference meet. The Lady Lions are coming off an impressive performance last weekend, finishing second to No. 2 Alabama and defeating No. 6 Oregon State.
"We're fired up and ready to go," senior tri-captain Tracy Kerner said. "We want to build confidence."
Although the Buckeyes are not ranked, the Lady Lions have no intentions of taking them lightly.
"Our goal is not to take anything for granted," Lady Lion Coach Steve Shephard said. "They are going to be motivated against us."
But for this meet, the Lady Lions have a motivation of their own.
"Our goal is to score higher and higher each meet," Shephard said, adding he would like the team to earn 194.0 points. Shephard said that number would give the Lady Lions a better reputation among judges.
The judges should not need to be influenced much more -- the Lady Lions have scored 191.475 and 193.025 in their first two meets, respectively. The team may achieve a score of 194.0 if it performs better on the uneven bars.
Penn State has struggled on the bars so far, but the team believes the remedy is bringing what it does in practice to the meets.
"It's a matter of confidence," Shephard said. " They never fall in practice."
He added the team must learn to block out the crowd and repeat confident thoughts in its mind.
