Women's Indoor Track
The Lady Lions (1-0) will compete against nearly 200 teams from across the nation at the Terrier Classic today and tomorrow. The meet is hosted by Boston University.
Key stats: The Terrier Classic is a non-scoring meet focusing on personal bests and qualifying performances for the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships, Big Ten Championships, and NCAA Championships.
Injuries: Lady Lion distance runner Kim Kelly is sidelined with a pulled hamstring. She is expected to rejoin the team next week.
Preview: Many Lady Lions could qualify for nationals, following the NCAA provisional qualifying height of high jumper Holly Jones in the Lady Lions' 77-45 win against Georgetown last Saturday. An expected standout is Penn State's Kim Hicks in the shot put. Penn State Coach Teri Jordan said Boston's banked 200-meter track favors distance runners and could produce national qualifiers in the 3,000-and 5,000-meter events and the distance medley relay.
Jordan says: "It's great competition. It's one where we usually qualify people for nationals."
Men's Indoor Track
Members of the men's indoor track team will compete in the Florida Barnet Bank Invitational at 10 a.m. on Sunday in Gainesville, Fla. Other entrants include Villanova, Georgetown, Florida State, George Mason, South Carolina and host Florida.
Key Stats: Penn State finished third in a home meet with Michigan (65 points) and Michigan State (46) last week. The Lions finished with 40 points. Vin Stewart finished first in the shot put for the second straight week. High jumper Dave Kriz had a season-high jump of 6 feet 10 inches in a second-place finish last week.
Injuries: There are no serious injuries reported for any of the participants.
Preview: The Invitational's premier event is the distance medley, said Penn State Coach Harry Groves. Penn State sends the team of Ch Arosemena, James Robbins, Tom McGlynn and Bob Hamer to the competition. Lion Vin Stewart will try to capture another shot put victory this weekend. Dave Kriz and Aaron Gawne will compete in the high jump.
Groves says: "This is an opportunity to compete against some really good teams, and this is an important meet for NCAA qualifying."
Florida Coach John Webb says: "This is one of the best collegiate scoring events of the year. There are really no weak events."
