USG Election Code changes

Collegian Staff Writer

Potential Undergraduate Student Government presidential candidates will face new rules for the upcoming elections in March. The 1995 Elections Code was passed through the USG Senate Tuesday.

Many changes were made to each article in the piece of legislation.

"The changes were necessary and will help make the elections run smoother," said Mark Shepanski, town senator.

There have been more changes this year than in the past years. The Legislation Appropriations Review Committee (LARC) has been working on the code for quite some time.

Shepanski was very pleased with the changes that have been made. North Halls Senator Bill Rothwell also feels confident in the code and is happy that it is finished.

"I think we closed a lot of loop holes we had last year," Rothwell said.

The changes include a decrease in the number of students per senator in the voting districts and an increase in pay for each area commissioner to $50 from $25.

After LARC made the alterations in code the USG senate must approve them for the election commissioners use. The elections commissioners must follow and enforce the code.

Commissioners have the right to fine violators of the code for reasons such as a candidate encouraging prejudice against another candidate or premature announcement of candidacy.

But campaign spending limitations, previously discussed as a change, was not approved.

Steve Wakefield, an East Halls senator, and Rothwell proposed two amendments: one entailing the no-spending-limit idea, the other dealing with the registration fee.

"I would have liked to see the amendments go through, but senate didn't pass them," Rothwell said.

But Shepanski was very opposed to the no-spending limits amendment.

"The limited spending helps keep the elections fair for all those running," he said.
