Candidates for the elected positions of the Interfraternity Council presented their positions and goals to fraternity chapter presidents and representatives at a meeting last night at Sigma Chi fraternity, 400 E. Prospect Ave.
The candidates emphasized that rush is one of the most important functions of IFC. They also agreed that communication among chapters and between the IFC and the chapters is a very important issue.
Steve Carrel, a member of Chi Phi fraternity, 360 E. Hamilton Ave., is a candidate for president and is now the IFC public relations chairman. In his speech, he expressed the importance of communication within the IFC.
"We need to break down the communication barriers, the relationship barriers," Carrel said.
Bruce Booth, another candidate for president, is currently the vice president of the IFC Board of Control and chapter president of Beta Theta Pi, 220 N. Burrowes Rd. He also expressed the significance of communication and suggested using E-mail and the Internet to enhance correspondence. Booth emphasized that the election of officers is a very important process that should be taken seriously.
"We are deciding the future of the IFC. We are deciding the future of this Greek system," Booth said.
The five candidates for IFC administrative vice president are Mike Gardner, member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity, Bryan Brockson, a member of Delta Upsilon fraternity, Ed Kilpela from Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, Steve Gordon from Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity and new nominee Robert Cole from Delta Sigma Phi.
These candidates also stressed communication as an aspect of IFC that needs to be improved.
Karl Fuchs, a member of Triangle fraternity, and Tyler Ridgeway from Acacia fraternity were nominated last night immediately before the speeches for IFC treasurer. While Fuchs emphasized rush as his top priority, Ridgeway talked about communication and its need to improve.
Nominations are open until elections which will be held Feb. 6 at Kappa Sigma fraternity, 255 Highland Ave.
