Men's Indoor Track
The Lions will host Big Ten rivals Michigan and Michigan State at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow at Greenberg Indoor Sports Complex.
Key stats: Penn State opened its season with a resounding win in a quad meet at Bucknell. The Lions finished with 108 points, while second-place Bucknell scored only 62. Lion sophomore Damon Reed won two events, including a 22.5-second 200 meter. Michigan defeated Indiana in its season opener last weekend.
Injuries: No major injuries to report.
Preview:Michigan features All-American distance runner Kevin Sullivan. Penn State will counter with senior tri-captain Bob Hamer. The Lions should have a good idea of where they stack up with the rest of the Big Ten after this meet. Michigan is the defending conference indoor track champion, while Michigan State always has a strong team, Penn State Coach Harry Groves said.
Groves says: "We'll have to take a step up this week. Anyone who says they like track and doesn't come to see this is crazy. It's a chance to see several Big Ten winners and high-class athletes. This is the best competition we'll have this year."
Michigan Coach Jack Harvey says: "I think we'll match up well with Penn State. Penn State, us, and Michigan State are all strong middle distance teams. It should be a good meet."
Men's Swimming and Diving
The Nittany Lions (2-2, 0-1 Big Ten) have a busy weekend of competition. First, they will meet the Panthers (5-3) at noon today in Pittsburgh. The Lions then travel to Ohio State, where they will compete against the undefeated Buckeyes (10-0, 3-0) at 1 p.m. tomorrow.
Key stats: As long as Coach Chuck Knoles has been at Pitt, his team has never been successful against Penn State. Tomorrow's meet with No. 18 Ohio State will be the second Big Ten contest of the season for the Lions. Penn State lost to Minnesota on Jan. 6 by a score of 157-86.
Injuries: Panthers' swimmer Chris Perry is suffering from a knee injury. He will swim, but not breaststroke, which is his primary stroke. There are no serious injuries for Ohio State or Penn State.
Preview: Lion Swimming Coach Peter Brown expects to confront a talented Pitt squad. Panthers' NCAA qualifier Matt Brady, who is able to swim any event, may not be able to compete to his full ability. He is one of a handful of Panthers sick with an intestinal flu. Pitt backstroker Pete Hezky and diver John Soulakis are also expected to provide some tough competition.
Ohio State also has some powerhouse swimmers. Brown said backstroker Marko Strahija, who is from Croatia, recently joined the Buckeyes. NCAA qualifier and scorer Jay Hladish is one of the top freestylers in the Big Ten. The Ohio State diving team is led by Brett Bartolussi and Chris Good.
Penn State will see the return of diver Chris Devine, who was resolving graduation plans, and swimmer Alex Cunha, who has recovered from the flu.
Coach Brown says: "This will be a good weekend of competition for us from a total team standpoint."
Coach Knoles says: "Penn State is definitely one of the toughest teams on our schedule. One of these years we might be able to beat them, but I don't think this is going to be the year."
