No one can blame Iowa Men's Basketball Coach Tom Davis if he has been complaining of a lack of sleep lately.
After jumping out to a surprising 10-2 start, the No. 25 Hawkeyes (11-5, 1-3 Big Ten) have fallen on tough times. Since beginning conference play with a 74-55 victory over Indiana on Jan. 4, Iowa has dropped its last three games -- all by just one point.
"I think anybody in this league is going to lose one-pointers this year," said Purdue Coach Gene Keady, whose Boilermakers were the latest to knock off the Hawkeyes. "You could lose three one-pointers in this league. The league is very tight."
Losing three consecutive one-point games, however, could drive any coach to the edge. But Davis has an optimistic attitude.
"We're still 25th in the CNN/USA Today poll, even though we have lost three straight games and we're playing without (guard) Jess Settles (out with a sore back)," he said. "That's pretty impressive to me. That says a lot about how hard this team works."
Big Ten Tidbit
Illinois Coach Lou Henson earned his 200th Big Ten victory when the Fighting Illini downed Purdue, 62-58, on Jan. 10, making Henson the fourth-winningest coach in Big Ten history. Name the only three coaches to have won more conference games than Henson. (Answer below)
Champaign Bubbles
No. 22 Illinois (13-4, 4-1) jumped out to a 4-0 conference start before being roughed up by Michigan, 69-59, Tuesday night in Champaign, Ill. But the Fighting Illini's string wasn't meant to last.
The last time a Big Ten school went undefeated in conference play was in the 1975-76 season, when Indiana ran off an 18-0 mark en route to Coach Bob Knight's first of three national titles.
Game of the Week
No. 12 Michigan State at Michigan (2:15 p.m., Sunday). A victory would maintain at least a share of the conference lead for the Wolverines (10-6, 4-1), who are currently tied with Illinois atop the Big Ten. Michigan State (10-2, 2-1 prior to the game last night) has to win just to keep pace.
Quiz Answer
Knight is the winningest coach in Big Ten history with 295 wins, while former Purdue Coach Ward Lambert and ex-Indiana Coach Branch McCracken rank second and third with 228 and 210 wins, respectively.
