Letter to the Editor
Committed trustee

Jason Alt's call for student trustee Don Lamuth to leave office at the time of his graduation is not only unnecessary, but were it to be carried out, it would be a disservice to the University.

In spite of Don's energetic, committed and determined leadership, Mr. Alt would have us believe that Don's graduation will immediately sever his ties to the student body, leaving him with no feeling or consideration regarding how we would react to a tuition hike. This suggestion is ludicrous: Don has exhibited a sincere and deep-rooted concern for the student body, and to imagine that this sentiment might disappear upon the receipt of his degree is completely unrealistic.

Furthermore, Don's desire to contribute to the selection of Penn State's new president represents a long-term benefit to all of us. Don's input to this decision will be influenced by his experience, knowledge, and genuine commitment to the student body. It would be unfair to demand that he splinter his focus and simultaneously conduct a search for his own successor.

Mr. Alt has a valid point: Student representation on the University Board of Trustees is invaluable. Currently, we have an exemplary representative. If Don Lamuth's term happens beyond the date of his graduation, we can count on him to speak with a voice that is strongly in favor of student interests.
