The inspired voices of the audience filled Eisenhower Auditorium with strains of "We Shall Overcome." But even more powerful and moving were the words of Patricia Russell-McCloud, a lawyer and community activist who spoke in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. last night. A recent change in the leadership of University business and operations is part of what appears to be a continuing move toward streamlining its administration by combining management responsibilities. A slowly spreading power outage sent University students searching for candles and flashlights Sunday night and plunged Atherton Hall, East Henderson and White Buildings into near-darkness for more than five hours. Because of a recent donation, students and faculty will continue to make money and promote research for the University. For weeks after the Intel Corporation announced the division problem with its Pentium chip, jokes, puns and top-ten lists flooded the Internet. Due to the unforeseen problems during the Undergraduate Student Government elections last year, many indefinite changes will be made to the elections code for the upcoming election in March that could bring conflict to the USG Senate.
The Icer forward chased the puck behind Illinois' net Saturday, where only one thing stood in his way -- goaltender Devon Huber. Seeing the 6-foot-4, 210-pound Icer coming toward him, Huber stood behind the net to shield the puck. Core curriculum, academic entrance requirements and local transportation by sports personnel for student-athletes were some of the topics debated at the 89th annual NCAA convention last week in San Diego. Dallas Cowboys' Coach Barry Switzer was not the only person to leave San Francisco disappointed. Also in the Bay area last weekend were four of Penn State's men's fencers -- senior Andy Gearhart and sophomores Jeff Feinblatt, Wes Waldron and Dean Jacobberger. Sheila Burgel and I almost don't make it to class on time. Burgel wants out, for her it is just another dull school day. For me, high school was a three-year old memory I had wanted to forget or at least revise by going through it once more today -- without the pressure. It's 8:30 a.m. and Burgel is pouting her best with puffy, cruddy blue eyes and frowning with Blossom-sized lips. Using critique as construction, like Sassy-fied Camille Paglias, both Kicking Giant and Huggy Bear offer up glimpses of the punk underground that were always available -- just rarely noted. A cultural stew of worldly-wise music gives the Dave Matthews Band a sense of bitter urgency in the confusing moments of life. The cohesion that binds the textures of sound into a grander statement is only one reason the group is unique. The University Concert Committee confirmed yesterday that Big Head Todd and the Monsters along with the Dave Matthews Band and special guest Ugly Americans, will take the stage at Rec Hall Feb. 12.
