Although some people agree with the state's decision to withhold victims' names from the public, others believe the state has no right to make that choice. Elizabeth Max is no stranger to the plight of flood victims. Doug Rae waited in line in the post office the other day to purchase three-cent stamps, but by the time he got to the front of the line, there were none left. If the State College Borough Council passes a proposed ordinance, some property owners will not be able to build any new apartment buildings or other high-density developments. In an effort to help solve the problem of students being unprepared for post-secondary education, the University is taking an active role helping America's youth become more academically equipped for college. Several students living in Cedarbrook Apartments were greeted with bills for damages to their apartments when they came back from the semester break. And they have 30 days to pay. Spring fever has hit State College -- or at least that is how things look. New financial ground broke Friday when Gov. Robert P. Casey released more than $600,000 for designing a new 115,000 square-foot library facility at Penn State Harrisburg. Last night at approximately 7 p.m., a blackout forced residents of Atherton Hall to rely on only emergency power. White Building and East Henderson Building were also without power. For many Americans, the Fourth of July best symbolizes their independence. But for David Graves, that freedom is better celebrated by Martin Luther King Jr. Day -- a holiday he thinks is so important that the University should not hold classes today. Stacey Crawford, housing case manager, said they are housing about eight people, which is a low number in comparison to recent months. Since the beginning of the fiscal year, July, they have had a full house.
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The rest of the Big Ten is well aware what the Penn State men's basketball team can do on its home court. Just ask Purdue, Minnesota or, yes, even Indiana, all of whom have seen the magic the Lions can work in Rec Hall. Faced with the prospect of slipping to 1-4 in the Big Ten, the women's basketball team staged two conference victories this weekend at Rec Hall -- due in large part to the play of senior guard Carla Coleman. As the theme to "The Addams Family" played on, junior Penn State gymnast Bridget Foley smiled brightly with every energetic flip and solid landing. When it was over, Foley proudly crossed her arms over her chest and pointed her toes skyward to cap off what the audience believed to be a perfect performance in Saturday's win over Illinois. Men's Gymnastics Coach Randy Jepson was correct last week when he said the West Point Open would be a two-team race, pitting Penn State against Temple. But the Lions were not as lucky as they were on Dec. 3, when they beat the Owls by five-hundredths of a point at the Massachusetts Invitational. Illinois Women's Gymnastics Coach Lynn Crane was counting on "fresh blood" to carry the Fighting Illini to victory against Penn State on Saturday. Penn State's men's indoor track team met little opposition en route to its first win of the season in a quad-meet at Bucknell on Saturday. Lady Lion Holly Jones and a group of her teammates qualified for the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships in indoor track, but came up just short of a win on Saturday. Losing to a team once can be disappointing enough. Losing to that team three years out of four would be three times more disappointing. Coming off a long roadtrip to Minnesota and an intense week of training, the men's swimming and diving team's weariness finally caught up with them last Saturday. After the first seven matches Saturday, the wrestling team's chances for victory over No. 18 Ohio State were bleak. It trailed 15-7 with three matches to go, and the Lions were likely to win only one of those -- Kerry McCoy's match at heavyweight. One had never wrestled a varsity match for Penn State. The other nearly left the team last Thursday. Sixteen seconds were all Penn State needed.
In that short span, the American Collegiate Hockey Association's No. 1 Icers (14-3-1) put two goals past No. 4 Illinois (14-7-1), sealing the second of two wins over the weekend at the ice pavilion. Saturday's 10-6 win was the Icers' third in a row, coming after Friday's 5-1 victory.
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The men's basketball team, led by a suffocating defense, jumped out to a substantial first-half lead and held on to dispose of Ohio State, 78-64, on Saturday in front of 11,323 at St. John Arena. Less than seven minutes into the women's basketball game yesterday, Michigan Coach Trish Roberts had to call a time out. The Nittany Lions have lost their prize quarterback recruit. Bethlehem Catholic high school senior Dan Kendra backed out of his verbal commitment to Penn State late Thursday and is headed to Florida State.Collegian Editorial: Celebrate Martin Luther King Day with alternative education My Opinion: Julie Nash
