Trackmen dominate first meet
Strong individual performances boost team

Collegian Sports Writer

Penn State's men's indoor track team met little opposition en route to its first win of the season in a quad-meet at Bucknell on Saturday.

The Lions dominated their season opener, pasting closest competitor Bucknell 108-62. Columbia finished third with 17 points and last-place St. Joseph's finished with nine. The Lions won 12 of 18 events.

"Even though the emphasis was on the team aspect, we had some good individual performances," said Coach Harry Groves. "Twelve first places is pretty emphatic."

The Lions rode several strong individual showings on their way to victory. Groves said the performances of sophomore Damon Reed and junior Ch Arosemena were especially impressive.

Reed took first in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.5 seconds. Reed also teamed with freshman Dave Thomas, freshman Steve Pia, and senior James Robbins to win the mile relay at 3:25.3.

Arosemena finished first in the 1,000-meter run at 2:30.6, beating out Penn State tri-captain Jake Bartholomy, whose time was 2:32.1.

"I did what I had to do to help the team," Arosemena said. "It was a good run for me."

The Lions also recieved a first-place finish from tri-captain Mark Crawford in the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.4. Vin Stewart, fresh off a Rose Bowl win with the football team, took the shot put with a distance of 53 feet, 3.5 inches.

Nowhere was Penn State's dominance more apparent than in the 1,500-meter run. The Lions took the top five positions in the event, with Tom McGlynn leading the way with a time of 3:57.7. He was followed by Arosemena, Bartholomy, Steve Oliver and Matt Hutzelmann.

Groves said the meet was more useful for judging the quality of the team than a preseason trial would be.

"You need to see another team's shirt to get the adrenaline flowing," Groves said.

Overall, Groves said he was pleased with the performance.

"It was a good start," Groves said. "We definitely have a lot of depth. We'll see if we have the quality we need to compete when we face Michigan and Michigan State next Saturday."
