Coverage of Blue Band spirit lacking

On Jan. 2, 1995, the Nittany Lions traveled to their first Rose Bowl in 72 years. There was great coverage on the front page of The Daily Collegian on Jan. 9 and also in the Rose Bowl Wrap-up section. There is even a picture of the cheerleaders as they attempted to rise the crowd's spirits. But what about the Penn State Marching Blue Band? This was our first appearance at the Rose Bowl, ever. As a member of the band, I know how much effort every individual puts into playing our school songs in the stands in a attempt to rally the crowd's spirits. We cheered and played for the 80-yard touchdown from Ki-Jana and every one of our other touchdowns. However, we also kept on cheering during Oregon's triumphs throughout the game while the majority of the crowd just sat there with grim looks on their faces. We helped boost the excitement before the game with our pre-game of school and fight songs. Not only are we the half-time entertainment, we are what helps to keep the team's spirits up and most importantly, the fans' spirits in the stands.
