The 100-degree temperatures were missing this year. In fact, the weather conditions were almost ideal for the 19th Annual Nittany Valley Track Club Arts Festival 10K run.
Former Penn State runner Mark Wimmer was the overall men's winner of this year's race, while Tresa Honka took the overall women's title. Last year, Honka placed fourth in the race.
"At the start of the race the weather was perfect," Honka said. "Then, it started to heat up. Actually, the temperature doesn't really bother me -- I just wanted to have some fun."
The event, which began at 8:30 a.m. yesterday, started in front of the University's Intramural Building on Curtin Road. Due to on-campus construction, the course was slightly altered for this year's 10K run.
"(The course) suits some runners," said Mark Davison, the director of the event. "Mark Wimmer is well-suited for the course. He's a real upright runner. You have to be in good condition to run this race."
There were about 430 entrants at this year's road race, while about 400 runners actually completed the race.
The top five male and female finishers received trophies, with the overall winners also getting $50 gift certificates from Rapid Transit Sports.
Three different age categories were added for the runners at this year's race. Both men and women competed in separate age groups instead of the wide-open 20- to 34-year-old category.
There were separate age groups of 20-24, 25-29 and 30-34. The winner of each age group received $10 and a plaque.
The road race, Central Pennsylvania's largest, was sponsored by University Orthopedics.
