Presidents of the State College Borough's seven neighborhood associations asked the borough council last night to consider creating a zoning amendment that would limit the density and placement of students in residential areas.

If students enjoyed the 90-plus degree days and sweltering nights of the past week in unairconditioned apartments and dorm rooms, they'll be thrilled to find out that the fun hasn't even begun -- because summer doesn't officially begin until 10:48 a.m. today.

After high temperatures during the past week, many State College residents were hoping for a jet stream -- and that's just what they got.

SPORTS

OAKMONT -- The 94th U.S. Open was a great tournament for Loren Roberts. A perennial also-ran, Roberts made his presence known and picked up a check for $175,000.

What is the No. 1 most sought after activity by students at Penn State?

An easy answer -- leisure time.

Finally there's a mystery intellectually stimulating enough for those brooding, coffeehouse types.

Within the hip-hop world, many artists are fond of paying homage to their inspirational influences. Usually this is in the form of bad covers or samples, but G. Love and Special Sauce give their respects through a refreshing musical outing and a few selective name droppings.

The idea of being unknowingly controlled through subliminal persuasion is one of the more recent neuroses of today's culture --generally, it is nervously dismissed as silly or impossible. But subliminal messages are more prevalent and ingrained than it might seem at first glance, and are particularly blatant in visual media.
