From recent political reaction to the state Supreme Court's ruling that saying "no" is not enough for a rape conviction, to the increasing number of female candidates running for political office, women's issues are climbing to the forefront of most politicians' minds. A defense attorney for the Ohio truck driver charged with murdering a 17-year-old girl found strangled last year in Centre County said she believes the prosecution is failing to prove its case against her client.
As Sue and Joe Paterno approached the podium, the Rec Hall crowd broke into a frenzy. The building was overflowing with excitement as the closing ceremonies of the 25th Annual Pennsylvania Special Olympics began at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. In some ways, it was a familiar scene. Dozens of Nittany Lion gridiron heroes, working their way across the turf on a field just east of campus while thousands of fans cheered them on. It is 5:15 p.m. on Saturday, and members of the Cambria County Special Olympic softball team are sprawled out across a small section of turf inside Holuba Hall. Although extremely fatigued, the team members anxiously await the presentation of their medals. They carried luggage and drove vans. They made dorm beds and made a name card for each of the 2,000 athletes. They were buddies and comforters. In return they were paid with hugs and smiles.
