NEWS

One student wants recipes for home-brewed beer. Another wants guitar lyrics and chords from a favorite song. A third wants President Clinton's inaugural address and information on past presidential speeches.

The Undergraduate Student Government Senate elected Town Senator Josh Bokee as its new president last night after a short debate.

Plans for converting the Pearce Milk Building into a youth center may never make it past the drawing board.

For the second time in less than five years, the Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Student Alliance is proposing to include a new group into its organization.

On most days around 8 a.m., State College streets are fairly empty. But yesterday morning while a few die-hard students walked hurriedly to class, two groups of local merchants, residents and officials strolled along College and Beaver avenues looking for ways to improve the downtown image.

The damp, stone walls symbolically bordering the University may seem impassable to some people in the community, but Penn State is attempting to tear down these walls to better educate the community and students.

Many students probably don't notice the University House when they go to and from classes every day because it sits snugly in the square of engineering buildings near the Mail and is shielded by a high wood fence.

SPORTS

PITTSBURGH -- Pieces of mail are strewn across the table in Peter Sauer's undersized room. Some of the envelopes remain sealed while others are torn open. Letters from Ohio State, Wake Forest and Penn State grace the top of the pile.

Three of Penn State's top competitors traveled to the Mt. Sac Relays in Walnut, Calif., with a simple goal in mind -- to improve their marks for Nationals. Two out of three isn't too bad.

Yesterday's doubleheader against Cornell, in which Penn State outscored the Bears 25-7, was reminiscent of Little League games gone by. Those were the days when everybody played and everybody hit.

There comes a time when every coach must ask him or herself the same question: When do the starters come out in favor of the second-teamers?

Here's the scenario: Both Lady Lion starters in yesterday's doubleheader at Akron pitched complete games. Leigh Bakun walked none, and Beth Reeves struck out seven. Conventional wisdom says that the team would have been successful with those type of numbers.

He climbs cautiously up to the ring tower over the pit. His hands tremble. His body shakes. Teammates rock the block he stands on. But gymnast Dave Riordan does not laugh -- he's afraid of heights.
