Lady laxers lay it on line for Lafayette

Collegian Sports Writer

It is a match up made in lacrosse heaven.

When the No. 6 Lady Lions (4-3) meet Lafayette (2-5) today at 3:30 p.m. at Lady Lion Field, two women at opposite ends of their collegiate lacrosse careers will face each other.

Spearheading the Leopards is Andrea Dagostino. The senior attacker has 18 goals and four assists to lead her team with 22 points. If that number looks familiar, it should. With 17 goals and five assists, freshman Michele DeJuliis tops the Lady Lions with 22 points.

"It should be kind of fun to see," Lady Lion Coach Julie Williams said. "(Dagostino's) a good kid. Last year we won 12-6, but she had three goals."

But Williams is also looking at senior Deb Coonley on attack after an impressive showing in last year's clash.

"They actually have quite a few people returning," Williams said. "They're not a young team. They've had a hard time this year. They have a couple good people on attack."

The Lady Lions could potentially play their third consecutive blowout if they can exploit the inexperience of freshman goalkeeper Heather Bohanan, who starts for the Leopards with a goals-against average of 11.83. Penn State is fresh off a 14-4 pounding of Drexel and an 18-3 triumph over Lehigh.

"Playing Penn State, she's going to be very nervous, but once the game gets under way, I'm sure she'll step up," Williams said of Bohanan. "You always want to exploit the goalie, no matter what year she is. But being a freshman, we won't hesitate to take any shot."

One of those who will be taking those shots is Dana Hughes. The sophomore midfielder had three goals against Drexel on Saturday. But she isn't content with the status quo.

"There's always stuff you can improve on," Hughes said. "Making sure every pass reaches your girl, clean catches, clean throws. No one ever has a perfect game, but it's something to aim for."

With common opponents, the Lady Lions have an edge. While both teams lost to Loyola, the Lady Lions defeated William and Mary 11-7 two weekends ago. The Leopards lost their first match of the season to the Tribe, 11-8.

Note:

-- If it is raining or if the field conditions are poor today, the game will be moved to Holuba Hall Turf.
