We in Students for Real Democracy have also denounced "secret societies" such as Skull & Bones and Lion's Paw. While at the same time The Daily Collegian endorsed an Undergraduate Student Government presidential candidate who is a member of Skull & Bones and Lion's Paw.
All the USG candidates expressed a "deep concern" for women and claimed adding street lights or "educating" women will prevent rape. They ignored that sexual harassment and rape are perpetrated primarily by men in settings such as fraternities that are conducive to sexist and misogynistic attitudes.
All candidates advocated "cultural diversity." One acknowledged the disproportionately low number of minorities on campus. And none mentioned that elitist institutions such as the Greek system which promotes racism and separatism.
Most revealing is that the Collegian derides SRD even though we are only the student movement attacking racist, sexist and elitist messages appearing in this newspaper. For what other reasons could they be attacking SRD?
Maybe it's because we demand that the University open its budget to public scrutiny. Or because we are the only movement recognizing corporate America has its research done at Penn State at our expense. Class sizes are enormous, the library is inadequate, and good teachers are paid less than researchers and often denied tenure.
Here are more of SRD's demands that we invite the Collegian to scoff at. We demand the concerns of women, minorities, gays, lesbians and the average students be addressed -- not with rhetoric, but by eradicating institutions such as the Greek system and secret societies.
We demand minority student recruitment and support. We demand a significant increase in the teacher to student ratio, tenure and equivalent pay for good teachers, and library improvement so it is competitive with Big Ten libraries.
