Erin Maurer was uncomfortable the first time she entered the room full of prisoners. Questions filled her head as she became the object of unwanted stares. "What are they thinking? Is it a joke for them?"

State College property owners will have more time to get their shovels out next winter after a snowfall -- but if they leave their shovels inside, they risk running into increased enforcement and bigger fines.

Standing on the steps of Schwab Auditorium among observers and supporters, quietly watching his gay, lesbian and bisexual friends speak about their lives openly and positively, Greg Korzydlo's face had pride and excitement written all over it and a smile from ear to ear.

The women's track and field team had a simple goal for Saturday's Quaker Invitational -- get good performances for Big Tens early in the season. The Lady Lions achieved nearly everything they set out to do.

The men's track and field team headed south to Charlottesville, Va. to start its outdoor season, and for once this spring, the grass was green but the team was not. The Nittany Lions won the five-team Milton Abramson Memorial Invitational on Saturday with a score of 99 points.

As the shot left his stick, he was still in an upright position. But as the ball whistled through the air, nestling neatly in the back of the net for one of his four goals, the tri-captain was taken on a tumultuous ride.

Continuing to have trouble, the Lady Lion tennis team fell yesterday to the Minnesota Lady Gophers 7-2 at the Penn State Tennis Club, completing a Big Ten makeup weekend with a pair of losses.

Two small scars on her left knee are all that remain. The only remnants left to remind Marcy Kolongowski of a day almost exactly one year ago.

Concentrate, examine, analyze, react -- the mental attitude of an athlete is one of the most important aspects involved with sports. It is also one of the hardest to master.

Approaching State College on U.S. Route 322, a traveler passes farm fields, cows and even the occasional Uni-Mart. But as Happy Valley Holsteins fade in the rearview, the last thing a traveler expects to chance upon is a film school.

On the surface, 1993 may have seemed like a banner year for films that dealt with the culture, lifestyles and conflicts of Asian people.

Although stateside they are few and far between, Asian directors from both here and abroad have created many memorable and influential works throughoutthe years. Below are some of the best of the bunch, all of which are available on videocassette and highly recommended.

It's a chilly early spring morning and Li Chen crouches at the side of her yellow aluminum-sided house, digging at the barren ground and planting flowers to make her new Eastview Terrace home a little bit cozier. Gardening shovel in hand and East College Avenue-traffic noise just a few houses south, she tries to understand the questions I ask.
