This is a blessed week for those who enjoy the diversity of our freedoms in our democracy. This week is reserved, by powers higher than even our beloved student government, for those who have come out of the closet with regard to their sexual preference. But why should we stop at sexual preference? Why should we not celebrate being politically silly in the other multitude of ways?
Can't the logic legitimizing homosexuality be easily extended to more than two people? Therefore, gay couples can share the spotlight all week with polygamists. Since a gay couple should have the same legal benefits as a married couple, why shouldn't five men, eight women, three goats and a potted plant who choose to live together in their own lifestyle? Why isn't the Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Student Alliance fighting for pedophiles' rights like the nationwide movement is?
Getting away from sex, why can't people celebrate public flatulence politically? Or nose picking? These are all still somewhat taboo. Is it because these issues lack the political support necessary to push Old Main into action?
I, for one, oppose the homosexuality for two reasons. The first is political. Because I am completely aware of their political agenda, I choose to oppose it -- something LGBSA has a hard time reconciling.
The second is biological. Any high school biology student knows that form follows function. Homosexuality serves no funciton in the evolutionary scheme. In fact, it inhibits the basic instinct in all animals -- to sexually reproduce. So, intuitively, homosexuality is an anomalous condition. I believe that, like alcoholism, it is mostly psychological with some genetic factors. Also keep in mind that if people so choose can convince themselves of anything.
So during this week, forget that certain Americans are going to be acting silly around campus. Instead of condemning them because they act differently, join in the silliness and mention in passing: "You say you're gay? Well, I pick my nose."
