NEWS

The winter of 1994 was a harsh season that will not allow itself to be forgotten. Although there is little possibility of additional snowstorms this semester, the effects of the melting snow combined with rainfall are causing flooding problems in the area.

Although many space researchers are engineering high-powered and expensive telescopes, some as expensive as $100 million, astronomers at Penn State and the University of Texas at Austin found a bargain in the $13.5 million William P. Hobby-Robert E. Eberly Telescope.

For Kamyar Beihagi, it all began because of a bet with his roommate -- now his head is shaved.

Timothy Moll's grade point average went from a 3.0 to a 2.3 the semester he had to go to court for a pubic drunkenness citation, and there was nothing the University would do to lessen the disruption that the arrest caused to his life.

Bryan Kirk was on a mission all year. His goal was to win the National Collegiate Boxing Association Championship at the 132-pound weight class and he had arrived to that destination Saturday evening with a semifinal-round victory over California-Berkeley's D.Q. Thomas.

With the majority of its matches being played on the road, the men's volleyball team has a great amount of road experience. What with all that comes with traveling, the team has become more used to playing on the road than at home.

For the first time in her four years at Penn State, Coach Sue Whiteside has a nationally ranked player on her tennis squad --and she's only a freshman.

Senior wing-forward Jon Nichols lunged head-first into the try zone, scoring what may have been the most exciting trys this season. His score capped a 23-0 outburst that guided the Penn State men's rugby club to a 23-9 victory over George Mason at the Penn State rugby fields on Saturday.

Yesterday's match against Iowa had all the potential of a great one. In the Lady Lion's first home match of the season, they attempted to pull off one of the most improbable come-from-behind wins in team history.

When Indiana came roaring out of the box to take the lead in the Big Ten softball standings, some questions remained. Weren't Iowa and Michigan supposed to lead the conference? Sure the Hoosiers were 16-9, but are they for real?

The Buckeyes swept the Nittany Lions right off of Trautman Field last weekend, extending their winning streak to 13 games. Ohio State beat Penn State 12-3, 6-3 and 17-4. The fourth game of Ohio State's first Big Ten series of the season was cancelled due to poor weather conditions.

Comebacks and upsets were the key words floating around Penn State's men's tennis team after its stunning 4-3 victories over Illinois yesterday and Purdue Saturday. The Lions played far above their heads in defeating their Big Ten opponents.

Defenseman Ken Wille doesn't exactly get many looks at the cage for the men's lacrosse team. In fact, going into Saturday's game with Maryland-Baltimore County, Wille's jersey number (one) outdistanced his goals (zero).

There's something about facing the unknown, some fear that creeps into the minds of those who meet a potentially ominous opponent. Women's Lacrosse Coach Julie Williams faced this fear on Saturday when her team played its first-ever match against Drexel.

Diver Carrie Scherer showed off some of her tumbling skills at this weekend's U.S. Senior National Diving Preliminaries. She placed 12th on the 1-meter board and 15th on 3-meter.

The trouble with genre films is that they often bog down in themselves.

Tensions in the School of Communications have been high following the accidental release of an internal memo that Dean Terri Brooks called "nasty in tone."
