Sluggers trounced by powerful OSU

Collegian Sports Writer

The Buckeyes swept the Nittany Lions right off of Trautman Field last weekend, extending their winning streak to 13 games. Ohio State beat Penn State 12-3, 6-3 and 17-4. The fourth game of Ohio State's first Big Ten series of the season was cancelled due to poor weather conditions.

Game 1: The home run was the name of the game in the opener when Lion center fielder Kirk Rentschler led off by knocking one over the fence. But then the reigning Big Ten champions took action, following up with five homers. Winning pitcher Matt Beaumont struck out eight, moving his record to 5-0. Dean Kerns, now 3-1, was the losing pitcher, striking out two and walking three.

Game 2: Randy Geis pitched the closest game of the weekend, holding the unbeatable Bucks to single figures. In his six-inning effort, he gave up long balls to Chris Williams and Ron Nelson. Offensively, Phil Bertolotti, Derek Ryder, Shawn Reese and Ryan Wheeler each contributed doubles to Penn State's best effort of the series.

Game 3: Ohio State pounded the Lions -- thanks to six home runs and three doubles -- in what became the final matchup. Winning pitcher Kevan Cannon tossed a complete game, posting nine strikeouts and walking not a one. Brandon Kahnell dropped to 0-2 for Penn State, as his teammates could only provide six hits.

Penn State is now 7-13, 1-6 in the Big Ten. Ohio State is now 17-3, and on top of the conference with a 3-0 record.
