Joe Paterno knows all about the dilemma that faces Women's Lacrosse Coach Julie Williams this weekend. The problem of having to face an unfamiliar opponent.
First-ever meetings were somewhat common for Paterno during the Nittany Lions' first season in the Big Ten this past fall. Of the 354 games that the Penn State women's lacrosse program has ever played, tomorrow marks the inaugural matchup with Drexel.
The No. 6 Lady Lions take on Drexel at 12 p.m. tomorrow. The game will be played in Holuba Hall, depending on the outside field conditions.
Fresh off their 18-3 thrashing of Lehigh, the Lady Lions look to keep the momentum going and improve upon their .500 record (3-3 overall, 1-2 at home). Williams said she feels her team has made some strides in its overall performance, but when it comes to preparing for an unfamiliar team, she will have to play the part of switchboard operator.
"I haven't ever played them before, so I'll have to do some calling around," the coach said.
The Lady Lions are currently riding a two-game winning streak after a disappointing start. The spark seems to have stemmed from a come-from-behind rally against No. 1 Virginia a week ago.
After that game, an 11-10 overtime loss, freshman Michele DeJuliis said the comeback had the team psyched up. Now, after the two wins, she doesn't think any differently.
"We're really coming together, we're really yelling," DeJuliis said. "We just get out there and play and our intensity is there."
But she, like her teammates, faces the same dilemma in trying to prep for a new opponent.
"We're going to have to play intense and see how it goes," she added. "I know nothing about them. We're going to have to come out full force."
