For the past week, Men's Lacrosse Coach Glenn Thiel has been mulling over a question. Thinking over a question is not out of the ordinary, but his decision about this dilemma could mean victory or defeat.
The question: Who will start in the cage?
The answer: He hasn't decided yet.
After last weekend's victories against Drexel and Lafayette, Lion freshman Andy King and sophomore Jason Johnson have been vying for the starting spot in goal.
"We have some decisions to make," Thiel said.
When the Lions (3-3) face off against UMBC (5-2) at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow on Holuba Hall's outside field, they will be playing against a team with a tough defense and a strong offense.
"There have been a lot of one goal games and overtime games," Thiel said.
He added that the competition may be more fierce because of an important addition to the team. UMBC has a new coach this year who has won five national championships at his previous school.
After the Lions' two easy wins last weekend, they will need to pick up the intensity to a level of play like they had against Towson State -- a 15-13 final-minute loss.
"It's kind of tough to keep up the intensity," freshman Greg Jackson said. "It's a lot different than playing against Maryland."
Although Thiel said he and the other coaches have been trying to make the team aware of the intensity needed to win this game, he also realizes that most of the players understand.
"We have to play pretty much flawless lacrosse from here on out," Captain Jay Graham said.
However, before the players even take the field, they are thinking about some of the logistics of the situation.
"It will definitely be good to get to play at home," Jackson said. "We want to get a big crowd and a lot of people."
