Wanting a debate

It is regretful that local Democratic candidate Mary Watson and Republican incumbent Lynn Herman failed to accept offers to debate on the issues pressing to Centre Region citizens.

There is no better forum for public examination of candidates and their beliefs. Without debates, area citizens are forced to make important voting decisions based on campaign rhetoric, instead of substantive communication brought forth in the public debate forum.

I have agreed to debate the candidates in any fair and open forum. The Penn State College Democrats and College Republicans have offered a forum for debate, but both candidates have refused to take part. Though there has been some discussion, no other local organization has to offered a debate forum.

It's not too late for the other candidates for the 77th State Representative District seat to debate. I urge my opponents to meet me in an open debate forum and discuss the immportant issues this area and this state face.

With health care reform, senior citizens' concerns and education issues facing the state's future legislators, this district's voters deserve to hear from the candidates in a debate in order to make that important voting decision.
