Endorsement?

I disagree with The Daily Collegian's endorsement of May/Campbell. The editorial claimed May will "get things done," but Mike King won't. Nothing could be further from the truth.

One thing you learn is that you cannot do it alone. You have to look to administrators for support and final approval -- if you want to get things done without dumping trash on Old Main lawn.

I will be working closely with the next Undergraduate Student Government president to represent student concerns to the administration and the University Board of Trustees. I will work with whomever is elected.

Mike King has talked with me about student issues. He has also met with students and administrators in researching his platform's feasibility. He has earned their support and learned of the obstacles.

I find it troubling that Erich May has not approached me about his platform's feasability or how we might work together. May is not a bad person with bad intentions, but I do have real concerns about his ability to work with student leaders and administrators to do things.

I am also puzzled that the Collegian had negative things to say about May. The editorial said, ". . . Many of May and Campbell's plans are rough and require more work . . . May seems weaker on town issues than some other candidates . . . His plans to strengthen cultural activities at the University are similarly vague."

The Collegian called attention to May's ". . . early mistakes as a member of the Executive Student Action Council." Then, the Collegian expressed "concern" over May's involvement with ". . . elite power networks, working to shape political and social forces for their own good." This is the candidate the Collegian endorsed.

The Collegian said ". . . all of the other tickets had more drawbacks than good points." The drawback they assigned to King and Lori Pennay was they are "polished and smooth." I can say not only is King "polished and smooth," but he is the most impressive student I've met at Penn State.

Ranging from a 24-hour HUB to a pass/fail general education grading system, the King/Pennay platform is achievable. But the ticket's greatest asset is the personalities to get things done not just the platform

As USG president Mike King will serve students with the same dedication that has marked his career of leadership and service to Penn State students.
