Michigan's Wymer thrills at Big Tens

Collegian Sports Writer

Someday, Beth Wymer will bore her grandchildren with accounts of this storybook night. For now, she is content with humility.

The nation's top female collegiate gymnast conveyed wide-eyed surprise about her perfection at Saturday night's Big Ten Championships. But there was no denying it -- her vault was flawless, from entry to landing.

So was the rest of the night.

"Vault's my weakest event," Michigan's junior dynamo deferred in describing her perfect 10 on the event. "But not anymore, I guess."

No, not anymore. There are no weaknesses in Wymer's gymnastics resum. Quite simply, she stole the spotlight, leading the Wolverines to their third straight Big Ten title. In the process, Wymer won individual titles on the uneven bars (9.925), floor exercise (9.9), all-around (39.675) -- and, of course, the vault.

"I don't see her being inconsistent at all," said Penn State's April Polito. "She's a great performer and she's a great athlete."

And for the third year in a row, she helped the Wolverines defeat Penn State by less than a point. Michigan needed a near-flawless beam lineup in order to hang on.

Wymer would finish off the meet on beam. And it seemed fitting that the Big Ten Championship would rest on the tender feet of this dynamic all-arounder.

"I was just ready to get on and get off and have us win the championship," she smiled.

In between, Wymer wobbled twice on the way to her lowest score of the night -- a 9.85. Not her best beam set, but good enough.

A boisterous Michigan following began an endless litany of "Hail to the Victors."

Wymer celebrated with her teammates, donning Big Ten Championship hats and T-shirts. Once again, Michigan had outlasted Penn State, 194.85-194.025.

"It's a great rivalry between us and Michigan," Lady Lion Coach Steve Shephard said. "I'd like to see it continue."

Both Shephard and Michigan Coach Bev Plocki expressed interest in having the teams meet during the regular season. The idea didn't seem to bother Wymer.

"It's obviously there," she said of the rivalry. "It was kind of fun."

Of course, Wymer had the most fun of all.
