Helping victims
I am writing in response to the article titled "Issues at heart of USG debate" in The Daily Collegian Friday. In describing how Mike King and Lori Pennay have addressed the assaults of the past weekend, the article failed to mention the most important aspect -- student input. Mike and Lori have been asking the students their opinion on the issue and how it can be solved. They are also committed to preventing sexual assaults at Penn State. For example, they hope to keep conduct records closed. The Office of Conduct Standards currently keeps individual conduct records private. This means that while important statistics and locations are open, the names of those involved are not. This helps victims come forward and report crimes without feeling threatened or endangered. Other universities have seen the need for this system and are adopting Penn State's approach. But the U.S. Department of Education is now considering alterations to this policy that would open all conduct records as educational material. Too many rapes go unreported as it is. Mike and Lori hope to maintain the current policy to preserve student privacy. This will also keep conduct violations, such as an alcohol incident, from following students on their records. The policy only relates to University hearings; hearings downtown will continue to be public knowledge. Mike King and Lori Pennay are committed to student issues at the University and will work to create a safer campus for all.
