Letter to the Editor
Technological scare

I had high hopes for Christopher Reitter's letter Monday. It began so well that his totally unwarranted conclusion was disappointing.

Rather than address the issue of abortion, which he raises, I wish to debunk the notion that we must succumb to the development of any technology.

Our society has surrendered its culture to technology. People will believe and obey any statement by a person wearing a white lab coat or sporting the newest computer equipment. Why? Because we put an inordinate amount of importance on scientific studies.

Reitter mentions a doctor who refused to disclose his findings because of the immoral consequences that could take place as a result. That doctor deserves a standing ovation, not a halfhearted, "Well, his results will eventually be unveiled; we just have to deal with it." If there were more people like this doctor, we would not feel so powerless against the current surge of technology.

Nowhere is this stranglehold of technology greater then in the field of medicine. Now doctors are capable of incredible feats. But few people stop to ask if doing everything possible is still the right thing.

What it boils down to is that technology can take over only if we let it. Let's conform our technology to our culture -- not the other way around.
