LGBSA endorses May/Campbell ticket for USG election

Collegian Staff Writer

To endorse or not to endorse is the question that the Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Student Alliance decided last night at a general meeting. A majority of LGBSA members voted to endorse Undergraduate Student Government presidential and vice presidential candidates Erich May and April Campbell.

LGBSA political chair Dave Wilson said, "I think that it is often hard to tell what a candidate will do once elected given what they say, but May and Campbell demonstrated a real understanding of the group and our needs."

The four tickets for USG president and vice president came to speak to the group last night and ask for its endorsement.

Karolyn Hicks, LGBSA public relations/historian, said she believes May addresses gay, lesbian and bisexual issues and the need of LGBSA to have an ally in USG. May addressed the issues without having to be questioned by LGBSA members, she added.

In other business, a majority of LGBSA members also voted for the group to implement gender-based voting, an issue in which the group has debated about throughout the semester.

The new type of voting allows the group to compare the percentages of women's and men's votes for a candidate depending on the number of male and female members voting, and the total number of votes each candidate receives, said Wilson. The candidate with the highest-overall voting score greater than one percent would be elected.

The issue will now be taken to the USG Supreme Court to approve changing LGBSA's constitution, Wilson said.

Also at last night's meeting social/educational co-director Judy Levinson resigned due to time conflicts and the extent of her course load. Levinson (senior-political science) said she is graduating in May and needs more time to devote to her studies and other activities.

Members are holding elections for the 1994-95 officers, said Wilson. Whoever is elected as female social/educational co-director will immediately take office to fill this position, he added.
