HERSHEY -- Making the $22 million budget cuts at the University's Hershey Medical Center has been a grueling process for those involved, but many center officials and employees seem to be breathing a little easier. HERSHEY -- Graduate Student Association President James Dailey unwrapped more than chocolate kisses at the University Board of Trustees meeting Saturday -- he also opened up a discussion about problems with board meetings. When looking into the dining halls at Pollock Commons, students can see black and white students sitting separately. This separation of some black and white students during meals is just one example of the division between races -- a division that some campus groups will attempt to close this week. Two people were arrested for drug charges following a car chase at about 5 p.m Friday, the State College Police Department said. A Philipsburg man was arrested on several charges Friday in connection with his alleged involvement with a 13-year-old boy. Charlotte is pretty popular these days. Six people are fighting for the chance to give her a kiss next month. HERSHEY -- After examining problems plaguing the Commonwealth Educational System, some people have suggested low demand for on- and off-campus housing and limited available housing as possible irritants. HERSHEY -- Although majority and minority freshman applications for next fall have already increased by almost 300 students from last year, University officials are still examining ways to recruit and retain students. A group calling itself Students for Real Democracy vented their beliefs in a news conference yesterday, stating that University institutions and organizations are controlled by businesses and fail to represent students' needs. As members of Beta Theta Pi fraternity threw snowballs and played with their dogs yesterday afternoon, Alpha Fire Company firefighters extinguished a small fire in their house. As the Undergraduate Student Government faces the annual changing of the guard, USG presidential candidates have their own ideas about how and when the ongoing restructuring efforts should be put into effect. Promises are being made and hands are being shaken, but after all the campaigning and debates are finished, only one thing will really matter -- voter turnout on election day. Four assaults and one attempted assault that occurred on campus this weekend marked a three-day period University Police Services is calling "unusual," prompting police and Office of Residence Life officials to take extra precautions. HERSHEY -- A small increase in room-and-board rates for 1994-95 was approved by the University Board of Trustees Saturday.
Four Penn State pugilists fought their way to the brink of national titles with victories in the National Collegiate Boxing Association's Northeast Regional Championships, held Friday and Saturday in White Building. Men's Lacrosse Coach Glenn Thiel looked more drained than his team did after Saturday's 15-13 loss to Towson State. There is usually someone there to watch the games, to see all the action on the field. But this time was different. As April Polito's arms flew up to conclude her floor routine, the cries from her counterparts in the bleachers -- members of the men's gymnastics team -- gave her a 9.9 long before the judges confirmed it. "Homeward bound -- I'm comin' home. Home -- where your thoughts are driftin'. Home -- where your love lies waitin'." Several weeks back, the Penn State men's tennis team suffered two difficult losses against Minnesota and Iowa. Its record stood at 1-2 and its confidence was waning. A win over a strong Temple team Thursday would reverse those losing ways and gain back lost confidence. Gymnast Ryan McEwen can't picture the possibility of collegiate men's gymnastics losing its NCAA sponsorship. He doesn't want to think about it. No athlete would. LORETTO -- The men's volleyball team proved that no matter how poorly it plays, it is still the best team in the east. Last week when Coach Bob Krimmel and a trio of Lady Lion swimmers left for the NCAA Championships, the coach said he had "no clue what to expect." Now that the championships are over, that statement is more correct than before. This weekend, several of the Penn State individual fencers and squads defended their individual NCAA titles and pushed the Lions into the lead. But as well as the individuals did, it will be the coming two days of competition that will determine the Penn State's fate. CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- When the final match was finished at the 64th NCAA Wrestling Championships, Oklahoma State found itself in a very familiar place -- sitting atop the wrestling world. CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- When Kerry McCoy walked off the mat after his NCAA championship bout he had just put the final touch on one of the most remarkable seasons Penn State wrestling history. It was the last thing Helen Holloway needed. The co-captain of the women's basketball team, already playing with bum knees, must have had back pain as the Lady Lions came from behind to beat Kansas 85-68 in an NCAA Midwest second-round game on Saturday. There are many cases to be made for the turning point of the Lady Lions' 85-68 victory over Kansas in the second round of the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament. Gymnastics is a sport where even fractions of a point count. Every routine is based on a 10-point scale -- numbers that athletes can control based on how they perform. Now the gymnasts have little control over the numbers that will decide whether or not they will have an NCAA Championship after next year. It was a game in which the women's lacrosse team was praying for one more overtime. It proved to be one game too many.
