Men's Lacrosse Coach Glenn Thiel looked more drained than his team did after Saturday's 15-13 loss to Towson State.
Then again, Thiel may have had a tougher job than his players. He had to watch this heartbreaker from the sidelines.
"We should have won," a crestfallen Thiel said. "We just didn't get any breaks."
It was that kind of day inside Holuba Hall. The Lions (1-3) mounted two astounding comebacks, only to fall short in the last minute.
It was a 14-13 game when Lion attackman Pete Makover, who had three goals and an assist, lost the ball on the Lions' final attack with under a minute to play. Towson attackman Sean Ryan then beat goalie Jason Johnson with six seconds left, sealing the victory.
Penn State, however, had to fight to stay in the game for that long. After Towson extended its lead to 14-10, the Lions called timeout with 4:57 left to set a more aggressive defense.
"We came out and we got some nice goals off it," Thiel said. "We weren't getting the ball on face-offs, so we had to get the ball somehow."
The late comeback was Penn State's second of the game. The Lions had fallen behind 10-6 in the third quarter, only to chop the lead to 10-9.
However, the larger Tigers' domination of face-offs and Penn State's defensive lapses proved to be fatal.
Yet the Lion players were not discouraged.
"We played the best that we've played all year," said sophomore Rob Warren, who had three goals. "We knew if we could beat this team, we could beat any team in the nation."
Notes:
-- Towson attackman David Quinn was unstoppable on the offensive end, tallying seven goals and two assists for the 3-0 Tigers.
-- The Lions will travel to Lafayette next Saturday.
