Letter to the Editor
Playing God
The other evening I saw a spot on the one of the main networks'evening news that I found quite disturbing. Some members of the Chinese government were trying to pass a law that would force women to abort unborn children found to have Down's Sydnrome. Fortunately the law was voted down by the government, albeit by a narrow margin. This story did not sit well with me; not only am I pro-life, but I also have two siblings with Down's. I also recently heard news that came out of a medical convention held in California where a doctor announced he had discovered a method to determine whether or not an unborn baby has a predisposition towards homosexuality. The doctor promptly announced he would never disclose specifics on the methods he found. In no way do I support the homosexual movement, but aborting an unborn babies because they might be gay would only compound the immorality of abortion. Someday this doctor's methods, or someone else's similar findings, might be unveiled. On that day we would see a huge influx of Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Student Alliance members into Students for Life. This surely would be an ironic mixture. How far will such technology go? In the years to come, doctors will likely be able to determine other characteristics of the unborn: possibly obesity, hair color, intellectual capability, etc. I can see it now: "Gee honey, Dr. Smith says Junior is going to be fat and stupid. We'd better try again." Does this seem terribly unethical to anyone else? This possiblity scares me, as it should everyone who reads this letter. Think about it. People should not have that opportunity to play God. The development of that technology is almost inevitable. Abortion is legal. The latter will have to change.
