Debates about issues
Much thanks to both Ms. Hibshman and Ms. Swingler for that insightful article about the first Undergraduate Student Government presidential/vice presidential debate. Yes, in the approximate two hours for the debate all the tickets did was put on a show for us. They answered no questions about leadership, student apathy, services for students, dissemination of information, accountability and minority issues. Nothing; just throwing handcuffs and snide remarks. Many students have now missed an account on a very impressive meeting of the candidates' minds. When students read an article such as the one in The Daily Collegian Friday, why should they care about what USG does, or who runs for USG president? People complain about apathy and voter turnout; this certainly contributes to it. At this point, a student who could not have attended last night's debate probably thinks that she did not miss much. Just picture another student at the voter's box on March 30, going over the tickets. "Well, gee, that King guy, he's a good Irishman, but does he know anything about USG?" And on down the line. Instead of an informed choice, we have a popularity contest. The candidates deserve more respect and credit for their work than the article gives them. While "Antics mark USG debate" certainly catches someone's eye to the paper, it does little else. Please, for the next two debates, please do not let six minutes of antics ruin about two hours of debate.
