Penn State clubs on tap

Water Polo

The water polo team will be hosting a tournament this weekend at the Natatorium.

The Penn State men's A team will play today against Pitt at 6:30 p.m., tomorrow at 1:15 p.m. against Virginia Tech and at 6:15 p.m. against Millersville.

The Penn State men's B team will play Virginia Tech today at 7:45 p.m., James Madison tomorrow at 3:45 p.m., and Pitt Sunday at 9 a.m.

The Penn State women's team will play on the following schedule: tomorrow against Penn at 5 p.m. and against Harvard at 8:45 p.m.

Key stats: The Lions were ranked sixth in the nation last semester.

Preview: The men's squad is split up into A and B teams, each with an even distribution of starters and younger players.

Coach Todd Roth says: "We're probably going to win."

Tae Kwon Do

Tomorrow the club will travel to East Stroudsburg University for the Tae Kwon Do State Championship. Members of the club attending include: Hardie Cooper, a first degree black belt, Peter Bromfield, a second degree black belt, George Heath, a second degree black belt, Davion Clark, a first degree black belt, Sung Bin Yun, a temporary black belt, Janae Williams, a 1992 graduate of Penn State and blue belt, John Lewis, a green belt and Jin Sae Im, a third degree black belt.

Preview: The state competition is open to anyone whom is a member of the World Tae Kwon Do Federation. Students attend practice to develop their physical and mental skills. If a student shows potential, he or she is asked to prepare for the competition. Preparation includes training four to five times a week.

The competition is divided into eight weight classes. If a competitor finishes in the top four, they qualify for the national competition.

Coach Sam Chaar says: "The students must be prepared psychologically as well as mentally. Psychological readiness is 70 percent of the winning edge."

Boxing

The Penn State Boxing Team hosts the Northeast Regional Boxing Qualifier this weekend in the White Building. The action begins both today and tomorrow at 7:30 p.m.

Key stats: Boxers from Penn State, Lock Haven, Central Connecticut, Mansfield and Westfield State will compete to advance into the National Collegiate Finals. That competition will be in Harrisburg on April 1-2. All individual champions will be honored following Saturday's bouts.

Preview: There will be six Penn State boxers competing this weekend in six different weight classes. Bryan Kirk (132 pounds), Dan Mannion (146), Vince Calio (156), Scott Holsopple (180), Nick Kent (190) and James Lowe (heavyweight) will all fight in the Qualifier. Mannion entered this weekend's tournament with a win over teammate Jason Ashman.

Coach Bill Wrable says: "Everyone is as sharp as they've been all year. These guys realize how much work it takes to do what they're doing."
