Solve own problems

On Feb. 25, The Daily Collegian printed an article on the front page titled "LGBSA demands more University programs." This article was about a series of proposals put forth by the Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Student Alliance. In it were numerous requests including that the University provide an office and a staff position to meet the needs of lesbian, gay and bisexual students.

This new program, called Project TEACH! is being initiated by LGBSA, with the intent of using education to rid the campus of homophobia. This program wants the University to assume more responsibility for homophobia and heterosexism programs because the administrators have failed to "educate" themselves and the Penn State community on these issues.

After reading this article and a follow-up article on March 1, the question was raised: "What does it mean to 'educate' the Penn State community on homophobia and heterosexism?"

There are several definitions of the word educate (according to Webster's Ninth Collegiate Dictionary), but only this definition seems to fit: "To persuade or condition, to feel, believe or act in a desired way or to accept something as desirable."

So it might be concluded that the University, in failing to educate themselves and the Penn State community, has failed to persuade or condition Penn Staters to feel, believe or act in the desired way or to accept homosexuality and bisexuality as desirable.

Let's ask some questions. First, the staff position, office, etc., would be to meet the needs of lesbians, gays and bisexuals. What specifically are these needs? Last, what positive contributions has LGBSA ever made to the campus community?

Unfortunately, homosexuality has become more and more mainstream in the past few years. Many people openly oppose homosexuality. In spite of this, homosexuals wield more and more power. The University administration, by granting these requests, would be condoning the spread of homosexuality and giving them more influence.

The LGBSA is a club formed by people who have chosen their lifestyles, it is not a club formed by people with born physical challenges or different skin colors. If LGBSA is looked upon unfavorably, it's because they act against the established good of the society. Therefore let them pay for their own "needs."
