Arrested Development to headline regatta

Collegian Staff Writer

Grammy award-winning group Arrested Development will headline the 20th annual Beta Sigma Beta Sy Barash Regatta.

At a press conference last night at Beta Sigma Beta fraternity, 255 E. Fairmount Ave., the overall committee kicked off this year's regatta and announced local band Queen Bee and the Blue Hornet Band will be the opening act at the outdoor concert on April 24.

This year's featured speaker of the kickoff -- the same speaker who announced the band at the first regatta in 1974 -- was football coach Joe Paterno.

"The first thing they taught me about regatta was 'you gotta regatta' and you know I thought it was an Italian sauce," Paterno said. He congratulated members of Beta Sigma Beta and co-sponsor Delta Delta Delta sorority, 108 Cross, for all the work they put into this year's regatta.

"You'll find this out all your lives, the more you give the more you'll get out of it," he added.

University Trustee Marian U. Coppersmith Fredman, widow of Barash, donated $2,000 for this year's event, and also presented the overall committee with an additional $2,225 that she raised in donations.

"I wish you, as I always do, better luck than you've ever had," Fredman said.

The regatta is the largest philanthropy by a single fraternity in the United States. Money raised is donated to the Centre County Unit of the American Cancer Society in honor of State College businessman and Beta Sigma Beta alumnus Barash, who died of cancer in 1975.

Regatta will be held at Bald Eagle State Park. Tickets go on sale March 28.
