Understand freedom

Anthony Demangone clearly showed his misunderstanding of freedom in his column, "Affirmative action and freedom coincide in real world." Fidel Castro would even agree with this final vision of a free country.

Freedom does not come at the expense of another. My freedom of speech does not restrict your freedom to say what you please. My freedom to keep and bear arms does not restrict your freedom to do so and actually enhances the freedom of society. My freedom to purchase property through voluntary exchange restricts no one else's freedom.

Mr. Demangone's utopian vision of guaranteeing food and good education for every child must come at the expense of another individual. The government must confiscate the fruits of another's labor to give to the one in need. In attempt to fulfill his guarantee of a child never hearing a nasty word, the government must restrict another's right to free speech. That is not freedom.

What Tony Demangone described is temporary safety and security. Our founding father knew that this type of safety is in conflict with freedom. Benjamin Franklin said it best when he stated, "They that give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."

Mr. Demangone, I suggest you set aside Das Kapital for the moment and read The Federalist Papers to learn more about the philosophy of freedom.
