When students go to the voting booths on March 30, they will be deciding more than just who the next Undergraduate Student Government leaders will be. They will have an opportunity to voice their opinion on important issues.
In an effort to obtain information on students' concerns and interests, the USG Senate passed a resolution last night to place referendums on the 1994 USG elections ballot.
Referendums were not on the ballot last year, but the senate decided to use them this year.
According to the referendum resolution, "one of the best ways to acquire student input is to hold a student referendum."
Questions pertain to rating the effectiveness of academic advising, implementing fast food restaurants at the HUB Eateries and making such facilities as Pattee, the HUB, the Intramural Building and Rec Hall open 24 hours.
Some senators said they were concerned that the questions are similar to Senate President and USG presidential candidate Mike King's platform goals.
"The second question had a remarkable resemblance to his platform," said Gaylin Vogel, South Halls senator and campaign manager for Carina Defferrire and Pat Scanlan. She expressed her concern at the Legislation and Appropriations Review Committee meeting as well as the senate meeting.
King said the issues reflect students' concerns.
"These issues are on my platform because they are key issues that affect students in their everyday lives, which is exactly why students deserve to have a say in them," King said.
He added that the referendums were designed to give USG a basis for action.
"If leaders in USG want to get anything accomplished next year, they need to get real student input first," King said.
