Dear Undergraduate Student Government candidates,
We hear USG elections will take place March 30, and campaigning officially began yesterday.
During the crucial campaign period, we hope you let us know what you can do for us. To be honest, we really don't think many past student governments at the University have made strong enough efforts to understand our concerns.
For instance, we wonder if you realize how frustrated we are with the lack of convenient on-campus parking. Or do you know how user-unfriendly the Pattee hours are whenever we've got research to do? For that matter, how about the treacherous walks on campus during the snowy, icy winter? Meanwhile, our concerns about using teaching evaluations more effectively remain unanswered. Of course, none of that matters if we are continually stuck standing in line at the under-staffed computer labs for days on end.
But these may be the concerns of only some students. There are many people who are interested in other important issues, such as minority recruitment, affirmative action and free speech rights. We need to help shape the University's response to the debates currently raging throughout the country on those key issues.
To be honest, we are sick of ineffective student government. For this election to work, we need you to come to all of us to hear our concerns, whatever they may be. After all, this is a "student" government, so we expect you to approach us --the students.
When you decided to run for office, you sent a message to Penn Staters that you wanted to improve our University. We've got plenty we'd like to get off our chests . . . if you're ready to listen.
Sincerely,
Joe Schmoe and Jane Student
