One of the nation's premier new bands is coming to Penn State and the good news for students is the show won't cost a cent.
Belly, whose music has become popular on college campuses during the last year, will grace Penn State with its alternative melodies April 16 between 1 p.m. and 9 p.m. on the HUB Lawn at the Movin' On celebration, organized by the Association of Residence Hall Students.
Mark Shulman, ARHS director of Movin' On, said Belly will probably play for about an hour and a half.
"They're a very good national headliner," Shulman (sophomore-film) said. "We're expecting a big turnout."
Paul Guzik, manager of Blue Train Compact Disk, 418 E. College Ave., said Belly is a fairly popular band and their albums have sold well.
Guzik is excited about the band coming to town. "I think it's really cool," he said.
Jim Stephens, vice president of ARHS, said Movin' On's attendance has gone down in the past few years, and getting a nationally recognized band should appeal to more students.
Shulman said two local bands have also been confirmed to play -- The Boxing Oscars and The Dirges. Two more bands will be added later to the show, which marks the 20th anniversary of Movin' On, he said.
The event was originally named to celebrate seniors graduating from Penn State, Shulman said, but in recent years it has also been geared toward all students moving on in their lives.
"It's a full day of entertainment where you won't have to pay a dollar," he said.
ARHS has planned to make this year's Movin' On into a larger celebration than it has been in the past. Not only will students be able to enjoy free music, but free food, drink and amusements as well.
"It will be the biggest free event students will have seen in their time," Shulman said.
ARHS is also trying to get an inflatable amusement park, including a velcro wall, sumo wrestling, a bungee run, moon bounce and gladiator jousting, Shulman said, adding the plans are still in the works.
