After two incomplete performances, the men's lacrosse team put it all together. Penn State (1-2) notched its first win of the year Saturday, defeating Villanova 16-12 in Philadelphia.
"We did things offensively that we hadn't done before," Coach Glenn Thiel said. "I thought we played a complete game. We definitely showed more poise out there, and that's a good sign."
The team rebounded from a four goal deficit to grab the victory. Thiel was pleased with the team's press, and noted that his squad played with more confidence than in previous contests.
Penn State received contibutions from several team members, including four goals each for Erik Merkel and Rob Warren. Freshman Greg Jackson scored three goals and assisted on four others.
"We took a lot of shots and put good pressure on them," Jackson said. "It's great for us to get the win."
Despite the success, Thiel still stressed the need for improvement. The coach said his team needs to reduce the number of breakaways allowed, and better execution on the defensive end will lead to more success.
Spring break did not begin as successfully for the Lions. The team traveled to Georgetown on March 6, and was pummelled by the Hoyas, 17-4. Penn State grabbed a 1-0 lead before the enemy caught fire.
"We put a lot of effort and hard work in preparing for our first two games," Thiel said. "So I think when we lost those games it was very disappointing."
