Devine wins two titles at Eastern regionals meet

Collegian Sports Writer

Lion diver Chris Devine proved he could consistently deliver this weekend by capturing both the 1- and 3-meter boards at the East Region NCAA Diving Prequalification meet in Annapolis, Md.

It was only two weeks ago when he took first place in the 3-meter dive and third in 1-meter at the Big Ten Championships in Minneapolis, Minn.

"The Big Ten meet was a big hurdle for Chris to get over, and he found out he could beat the top guys," Diving Coach Craig Brown said. "We figured he could dominate in the East if we got the job done, and we got the job done."

Finishing behind Devine in 1-meter was Greg Sobo of Colgate and Harvard's Craig Narveson. Devine's teammates Ryan Smith and Seth Kane finished seventh and 12th, respectively, in a field of 26. In the 3-meter event, Navy's Nate Smith took second and Colgate's Sobo followed with third.

The top four point-getters will advance to the NCAA meet to be held in Minneapolis two weeks from now. Brown was not sure who would join Devine there, but he has his money on Sobo, Nate Smith and John Soulakis from Pittsburgh.

The three women divers also competed in the weekend action. In 1-meter, Erika Georgs placed 15th, Carrie Scherer took 19th and Melissa Breen rounded it out with a 22nd-place finish. Scherer finished seventh in the 3-meter, followed by Breen at 10th and Georgs with a 15th-place finish.

Neither the men nor the women dove in the platform event.
