Letter to the Editor
What's offensive?
For Darren Gordon and everyone else who insists on parading their offendability in angry letters, let me validate your feelings. Because all feelings are valid, but let me add that being offended is your responsibility, not any anyone else's. People act like there's a new "right" in the Bill of Rights -- freedom from being offended. They say "I am offended by" as if that automatically means the offenders need to change their behavior as a result. You may share with me that something I do bothers you, and you may say "I want you not to do that." But I still have the right to say, "Yes, I am sure that offends you, but I'm not willing to fix you by changing what I'm doing." We are all so hyped on "personal responsibility" in our society, yet so out of touch as a culture without feeling that we are blind to the simple fact that I, and I alone, am responsible for the internal circumstances within me that predispose me to respond to what someone does with a given feeling. In addition, I'm also saddened that Gordon and others find so much shame in God's finest creation that they need to shriek when thay see it. What do you do when you shower, avoid the mirror? When the naked body in erotic poses brings such a violent emotional reaction, the last thing I want is any connection with someone willing to court the flu to "inspire" it.
